1934 Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp (Duck Stamp):
In 1934, the United States passed the Migratory Bird Hunting Stamp Act, also known as the Duck Stamp Act, in response to the devastating decline in waterfowl populations due to overhunting and habitat loss. The law required all waterfowl hunters 16 and older to purchase and carry a federal duck stamp while hunting.
The first stamp, issued in 1934, featured artwork by J.N. "Ding" Darling, a renowned political cartoonist and conservationist. It cost $1, and proceeds were used exclusively to protect and acquire wetland habitat for ducks, geese, and other migratory birds. This marked the beginning of a powerful, hunter-funded conservation model.
The 1934 Duck Stamp not only helped fund the National Wildlife Refuge System but also became a symbol of hunters stepping up to save the very resource they pursued. It’s widely considered one of the most successful conservation tools in American history.
